DUNCAN, OK – A gunman opened fire outside the Walmart store in Duncan on Monday morning, killing a man and a woman before turning the gun on himself when he was confronted by an armed citizen, local officials and witnesses say.
Family members related to the victims are saying it was related to a domestic dispute between a husband and a wife. The identities of those killed were not immediately released.
The incident happened at about 9:53 am on Monday when Duncan Police were called for a gunman at the Walmart Supercenter at 3393 N 81 Hwy in Duncan about 65 miles (105 kilometers) southwest of Oklahoma City. Once Police arrived, it was determined that the shooting occurred in the parking lot.
“We have three individuals that are deceased. We have two white males and a white female,” Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford said. “Two of the victims are inside a vehicle, one is outside the vehicle. And at this point that’s about all we do know.”
One man and the woman were found dead in a car, and the other man was found dead outside the car, police said. Police have also confirmed that the gunman was one of those found dead at the scene.
A handgun was used in the shooting. Ford said police are looking for witnesses that saw what led up to the shooting.
“As this is an active police investigation, we are currently referring additional questions to law enforcement and assisting however possible. This was an isolated incident in the parking lot and was not an active shooter situation.”Statement from Walmart
A witness told local ABC affiliate KOCO-TV that he heard about 9 gunshots as he arrived at the Walmart. He said he saw the shooter with a gun in his hand and saw another man run up to him with a gun.
“Another guy ran up there and had a gun. The shooter shot himself,” he said.
Ford said the store is still open, and the north entrance is open but the south entrance has been roped off while officers investigate.
Officials with Duncan Public Schools confirmed all schools were placed on lockdown during the investigation. The lockdown has since been lifted.
Red River Tech had also been placed under lockdown and their lockdown has also been lifted.
