Dr. Everett Piper

Dr. Everett Piper is president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla. A weekly columnist for the TheOKieBlaze, Piper is also a frequent guest commentator on a variety of talk radio programs across the nation, as well as a published author and essayist. He is also the author of two books: The Wrong Side of the Door: Why Ideas Matter and Why I Am A Liberal and Other Conservative Ideas.

Dr. Piper’s views on this issue seem to be based more on a fantasy of what he believes trans-people are like, rather than any first hand knowledge or data. A trans woman is not just a guy who puts on a dress. They’re not more likely to be sexual predators than us cis folk. Also, he does not seem to be aware of the difference between biological sex and gender. His understanding of “elementary biology” apparently did not extend further than 6th grade. X and Y chromosomes and sex hormones are only a sliver of the story. I would suggest to Dr. Piper that he meet face to face with a transgender support group so that he can more fully understand what it like to walk in their shoes, before he writes blogs characterizing them as child molesters.

I would submit to you in the gentlest way possible that what you accuse dr piper of being ignorant of, that’s probably lost on the 12yo girl in the bathroom too.

      • Bart

My point is that trans people are no more likely to molest kids than cis people. The 12yo has nothing to worry about.

my point is that your original statement misses Dr. Piper’s point. i don’t want to speak for him because he’s wicked smart, but it ‘s not the transgender individual who enters the bathroom that is concerning; it is the predator who takes advantage of the law. it’s the unintended consequences, as it always is, that put some of us in a situation where we are called bigots and whatever phobe of the week because we dare to say that the rights of the 12yo girl are just as important as the rights of another gender confused human being. if both have equal rights, then we have a real conflict here.

          • Bart

There is no law protecting people who dress up as the opposite gender to enter bathrooms and sexually assault someone. Proposed laws to prevent discrimination against trans people wouldn’t protect that behavior either.

so let’s be clear. what you contend is that the only acceptable scenario for a man to enter the woman’s changing room at my YMCA is that he be “dressed like a woman?” what does that mean, dressed like a woman? now who is assigning gender roles? there are days that i wear gym shorts and a tank top and running shoes. am i dressed like a man or a woman? must he be wearing a wig? must he have long hair? i have long hair. do you see how convoluted this has become? in trying to protect the “rights” of a small minority, we are trampling the rights of so many others. i thought the point was not that he wants to dress like a woman but that he actually FEELS that he is a woman, regardless of the exterior adornments.

          • Bart

No! I’m saying the exact opposite of that! Being trans isn’t just about “dressing up” or living out a fantasy, as Dr. Piper suggested. It’s about personal identity, something the government doesn’t have the right to dictate.

^that one was supposed to go first :)

Also, if YMCA wants to make rules regarding their changing rooms, that’s up to them, not the state. The state in this case is trying to prevent places from making their own rules.

  • Here is a simple thought. Go into the rest room. Go into the stall and close the door. Do your business and leave. Wherever your attire seems to be most suited. No one is going to know. But, don’t look like a dude and go in the ladies room
